From St. Louis, at the junction of I-40 and 270, take I-270 north to Bellefontaine Road, turn north. Follow road and after passing the fire station (just past Parker Road), make a right turn onto Spanish Pond Road. Follow Spanish Pond Road to the park entrance on the right. There are 3 entrances. Trailhead parking for horseback riders is at the third entrance. This is an urban trail with heavy traffic on the streets leading to the park.
Miles of trails:
3 mile loop around lake.
Lakeside Trail around Spanish Lake is not open to equestrian use. Spanish Trace Trail around Sunfish Lake is open to equestrian use. It’s not a long trail, but is pretty and scenic. It goes through forest, fields, and even a small prairie. It’s slightly hilly, but nothing strenuous. The trail corridor is easy to follow with a few downed trees to negotiate, but nothing too hazardous. This urban trail has lots of houses around it as well as a lot of people in the park.
